Probably 275 hp to the wheels.
Parnelli Jones just might be the greatest race car driver ever.
What a pure engine sound..
If we only knew back then that this was the best it will ever be.......RP Parnelli Jones ....Godspeed
RIP the great Parnelli Jones.
Don White, Roger McCluskey, and Norm Nelson where outstanding in the Usac stock car series. I was fortunate enough to attend their races at Mid America raceway in Wentzville Missouri. As a kid it gave me a lifelong love of motorsports.
The names of these driver's are legendary, sadly some are no longer with us.
wtf? I wanted to know more about the Fuzuoku 9000..
Penske/Porsche out Mclarened mclaren, thats why they left. Fuel regs forced the 917/30 out, then Shadow took over winning with the DN4. Fabulous race series it must have been.
If this is the one that was never raced, and was sold a few years ago, it generated 545bhp, 9,000rpm redline.
AMC wasnt owned by chrsyler yet in 70 was it
Really cool i owned Cudas an Challengers an thats how i drove them....very predictable...better the faster they went which is rare
Thanks it was cool to see american muscle thrashing about ...
Well there to secrets about the boss 302 most dont know....BUD MOORE thats one the other is the boss 302 is fitted with 460 big block heads yes 460 2.25 intajes an 1.95 exhaust valve a monster 500 hp easy ...it was told carb changes added a 100 hp moore but was never needed...it waa so reliable as it was
I had a base 70 SE challenger an i put a AAR CUDA TRANS AN 14 TO 1 ALLUMINUM STEERING BOX an my challenger became super fun to drive i swear my base challnger tortion bar front end handled way better the all non dodge vehicles with shitty stock coil springs...the base formula for trans am cars was big block tortion bars small block motor the car would lean an it turned way better...dodge tortion bars could adjust front to rear weight just by raising the front end up or down just jack the car...my cudas an challengers were much better at 120 plus mph because they had aerodynamics from some NASA guy...but ford had the motor dodge didnt make a 302 v8 so they really were boinked over heating they tryed to destroke the 340 in 70 an wasnt great...its cool to see the cudas an challengers racing in second an in 4th....i think Swede savage won a race for dodge finally road america would be a good dodge track because the cuda body aero at over 120mph kicks in....Penskie was a force ..AMC beat dodge using mopar parts donahue won a title for AMC i always thought it was driving the boss 302 car...thanks
Good LORD! How many cars qualified for this race?
I grew up falling in love with Sportscar Racing at Mosport Park in the 80s and 90s. I just got back from Imola watching Penske Porsche 963s battle it out with Ferrari 499s in front of the Tifosi. Crazy that they were together 8 years before I was born, and I just got to watch the modern iteration at 43.
Remember watching Mark Donohue with my dad at Limerick when I was a kid. Also Paul Newman (in a Toyota?). My dad raced there a bit in his youth.
I got to meet Mr. Penske at one of my dad's Goodyear stores in the late 60's. Also got to ride in the Goodyear blimp around the same time. (Mayflower@York airport, York Pa.) I was still in grade school, thanks dad!
Parnelli Jones and Bud Moore them boys was tough in the bosss
I never missed a Can Am at Mosport. The best viewing areas were inside the track at the top of the entrance to corner 2 and on the outside at the apex of corner 3. That stretch was where the races were won and lost and the cars were displayed to their very best. The best race series ever.
McLaren had been dethroned? A McLaren won the race. Yeah, they didn’t win the season but this was the first race and the Porsche had shown itself to be fast but not bulletproof so nothing was certain.
Thanks for showing us this piece of history, including history in the making with Porsche detroning Mclaren. Thanks too for not bastardizing the video like so many do, by stretching it to 16:9 or worse, cropping it in order to fake a 16:9 format.
Those things were monsters. I love them.
Id love to give F1 the middle finger and restore this beloved Super Series free of politics and restrictions driving innovation and more excitement for racing fans through diversity opposed to F1 where every car is identical except for team colors and logos.
The 16 car is at McGee Motorsports at Turn 11 Sears Point, btw. Michael and Chris made my 428 Mach 1 work, too....everything from custom cut Koni heavy track shocks and Shelby drop-A arm mods to tuning.
theres nothing like hearing these cars fly-by you at full tilt. the sound just hits you like a brick, ya cant help but smile and feel the adrenaline
It's the distinctive sound of a hot smaller displacement V8 . 👍
My pop was big in AMC and I remember having dinner with Mark Donahue at an event... What a great guy and man, what a driver.
Met PJ in garage with my parents after trans am race waiting for race results . He was so relaxed and nice.
I wonder if it was the cars or the driver that made a winner? As an engineer I think many can fly the plane but few excel, very few can design the plane…😊
I watched Mark and the 917-30 at Laguna Seca. The most awesome racing spectacle I’ve ever seen 👍🏻
917-30 at Laguna Seca.Glorious L&M Porsche.
Every time they flew down the Corkscrew there was a huge BANG! when they shifted. Like an M80 going off!
Of all the racing I saw back then I never made it to on of those amazing events. Damm, it must have been incredible to see! Wow!
Awd in a rear wheel drive car 😂 Majic
I just saw that 917 No6 this week at the Peterson Museum in Los Angeles. was awesome! it will be there until April.
Im sure this series was the inspiration for Those Wacky Racers cartoon. I loved this series as a kid and miss the no stops attitude and all the independants up against the legends.
War dass schon alles?
And the Sunoco Porsche 917/30 was out of this World 😮
This Porsche 917/10 was amazing 😮❤
Jesus Christ... this is where Penske Racing juggernaut began. What an incredible video. 🏆 🏁💨
It was a shame that none of the early years of the Trans Am races were televised, as it made for some marvelous racing, as I attended several races in the 1969/70 seasons. The pit stops with the option of tire changes made for some interesting strategies. Ford lost the 1969 season, due in part to Parnelli Jones burning up his tires at the Sears Point/Sonoma race. Mark Donohue with the Penske Camaro won the race and the series for Chevy, but Donohue's tires were thread-bear at the end of the race as he skipped a tire change.
I saw this car yesterday at the Peterson Auto Museum in Los Angeles. Large awesome looking car.
Back when Ontario was the greatest place on earth. Painful to see how far it's fallen. 😢
This is a great example of the advantage of air filters, much maligned in the day, but standard equip in modern F1.
